The Siachen glacier, as the picture is the world’s highest battlefield at about 19000ft. However, more people have died here because of the harsh environment than war. India had to station troops and maintain them at a great cost, both human and financial, in 1984 after a clandestine attempt by Pakistan to occupy the glacier in the guise of a Japanese trekking expedition.
So why does Siachen figure on an adventure travel blog?
The Indian government is planning to organize another civilian trekking expedition to the glacier in September. It will include 40-45 volunteers including women, journalists and scientists. How i’d love to have been on this trek.

National Highway 1, on the way to Leh, Ladakh.
Ladakh and Enfields are almost synonymous these days. A rider’s nirvana, many make this arduous journey from Delhi to Leh every year in June/July. The roads in most parts are non-existent and the sturdy Enfields are the few motorcycles that can handle them. A couple of weeks back, I was flying to Delhi and was stuck at checkin behind some of these motorcycle enthusiasts - wasn’t hard to figure out where they were going - all were wearing heavy rider jackets and were checking in helmets and other gear. And if you are flying from Hyderabad to Delhi with motorcycle gear, there’s only one place you would probably riding to - Leh!
It is a landscape unlike any other in India - high mountains, barren land, which beckons tourists like none other. And, Aamir Khan’s movie ‘3 Idiots’ has only made traveling there even more desirable.
As they say, get Leh’d! :)
